Cellardor.com.au talks SUD…”I love you but I’m not going to tell you!”
Posted by Danae Goldsmith on January 7th, 2008 filed in Restaurant ReviewsWalking around the city in Melbourne on a Friday night, looking for a bite to eat can often be fraught with a little danger. Danger because Friday night may be everyone’s ‘fun’ night, but as you may have guessed by now, I prefer to wind down with a great meal and a fine drop. Not opposed to a little excitement though, without too much hoopla and shinnanigans, having just finished a full week at work, wouldn’t it be great to stumble across a little Italian eatery you could call your second home? Kind of like ‘Cheers’, but Italian, and with food!
Enter SUD Restaurant at 219 King Street, Melbourne.
This is the place where you can truly unwind. Vincenzo the owner/Maitre de, greets everyone like he is your long lost uncle, and treats you accordingly. Watching him work the tables in this intimate room with a Southern Italian feel is quite a treat. He has everyone in stitches and it doesn’t take longer than 2 minutes upon entering that you feel the weekend has finally begun.
Anyone with a cynical mind (who me?) would think that the entertainment is surely to cover up for a kitchen that lacks a little something. Not this kitchen, no way! Let the Opera begin…
What We Ate?
Antipasto - Scallops on Zucchini puree with Mint vinagrette - These tasted like heaven, succulent seafood morsels swimming on a bed of warm comforting mash, but wait what was that mystery flavour, reminiscent of truffle? Vincenzo’s smooth answer to us swooning was a cheeky, “Now I love you, but I’m not going to tell you!”
Secondo - Ok so we eagerly moved onto the second course - Peppered Lamb for my gentleman friend, no need for a sharp knife, as a butter knife would still slide sufficiently through this dish. And for me, Chargrilled Quail served on top of a Kalamata Olive, Rocket, Chilli and Cherry Tomato salad, with Nicola potatoes holding up the ensemble for appropriate drainage of the juices down below awaiting the inevitable Ciabatta mop up.
On the side, served with European runner beans with toasted almonds, why, “because they are great right now”, exclaimed Vincenzo.
And that’s what SUD is all about, everything that is great right now, from every succulent fish or meat fresh from its origin, to the crisp vegesof the season.
Frutta - Tap tap tap, let me in Brulee! Dried rasberries swimming in a sea of Vanilla Bean custard.
What We Drank?
When in Rome…so of course we opted for an Italian drop for our entree…
The Corte Giare Pinot Grigio (Veneto, ITALY), fun and dry like Vincenzo’s sense of humour! Get it at www.CELLARDOR.COM.AU for a lite $15.45 a bottle!
The Bellvale Pinot Noir (Gippsland, VIC), a truly classy velvet pinot, did a wonderful job highlighting the juices from our lamb and quail. Get it at www.CELLARDOR.COM.AU for a smooth $28.93 a bottle!
SUD is such a little unassuming gem of a restaurant, don’t wait to try the place where before too long, everyone will know your name!
Welcome to the New Year,
All my Best Regards,
Chardanae
